St Martins Church
St. Martin's is part of the Wayland Group of Parishes
The Church is dedicated to St Martin and parts date from the 14th century. We are fortunate to have parish registers which date from 1538 with very few gaps.
News About St Martin's Church
You may have noticed that scaffolding has
been erected at the front and back of the church. The Nave is also
full of scaffolding, right up to roof height! This signals the
beginning of the project to revitalise St Martin's church.
The scaffolding was put in place in
November to allow detailed inspection of the fabric of the building,
in particular to examine the roof timbers and upper parts of the
walls of the Nave from inside and the ends of the roof timbers from
outside. Alas, following that inspection, our professional advisors
- architect, structural engineer etc - have said that the building
should remain closed to the public for the time being.
In order to tell you more about this,
what impact it may have on forthcoming events at the church, and to
answer any questions you may have, we will hold a public meeting in
the Village Hall, starting at 6.30pm on Friday 16th December. The
meeting will be kept very short (about half an hour) and it is
proposed that the carol singing planned for that evening might start
with some singing at the Hall, before moving off around the village.
Mince pies, mulled wine and hot chocolate will also be available.
We would very much like to see you there!
